Wheel Building 101
Wheel Building 101 will teach students to lace, tension, and true a wheel from scratch with no prior experience.
Week 1: 101, Foundations and Practice
Monday, March 5 & Tuesday, March 6: 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Over the course of two, 2-hour classes, students in this beginner session will learn the foundations of wheel building concepts and practice building a stock rear wheel that will then be used in the Portland Gear Hub shop for programming and bike builds. Week 1 focuses on education and offers students an opportunity to practice a wheel before investing in their own materials. Class fee is $50 total with no materials fee.
Week 2: 102, Custom Wheel Build
Monday, March 19 & Tuesday, March 20: 6:30 - 8:30
Week 2 is an optional add-on to the Beginner's 101 session. Students will have already learned the base concepts and will have completed a practice wheel. Students continuing onto Week 2 will learn how to measure spoke lengths and choose a compatible rim and hub of their liking. In the another two, 2-hour classes of the Custom Wheel Build, students will build up a wheel to keep and ride!
Class fee is $125 (which includes $50 from Week 1) plus $75 for the second week, plus hands-on help measuring, selecting, and ordering the components for their wheel to take home. Materials fee is variable based on the needs of each student and must be purchased through the Gear Hub to ensure compatibility among components. We have ability to order a wide variety of new rims, spokes, and hubs as well as a selection of used hubs for purchase.
Students can either opt to sign-up for just the 1st week or for the entire session*.
Wheel Building is a mechanical art form we enjoy and are eager to share! This class will be led by the Portland Gear Hub Service Manager, Tucker Smith along with a 2nd instructor for extra assistance. Class will be capped at 8 students. Each student will have access to their own truing stand and bench space.
*This class requires at least 2 students per week to run.
