Be Your Own Bike Mechanic *Mountain Bike Edition*
Be Your Own Mechanic is a 6-week class with a hands-on approach to learning bike repair. Team-taught by professional mechanics and educators, Brian Danz, Shannon Belt, and Sara Ramirez, students will be able to deconstruct their bike, identify mechanical problems, and put it all back together again.
The class runs for 6 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Portland Gear Hub Bike School. The Bike School is a dedicated program and class space with 5 benches, stands, and bike-specific tools. There will be about 30 minutes of class time and 1-1/2 hours of bench time to work on your own bikes!
The Mountain Bike Edition will dive into the same general topics (below) as the regular class, but will focus on mountain-bike specific components, such as tubeless tire set-up, hyrdaulic disc brakes, and suspension. This class may not allow for overhauls of each mountain bike system, but will explain the concepts, describe how it works, and prepare you for what to do when you're out on trail and something goes wrong!
  • Week 1: Basic Balance - Overview of Bikes & Flat Tire Practice
  • Week 2: Make It Stop! - The Braking System
  • Week 3: Shifty Characters - The Shifting System
  • Week 4: Make it Go - The Drivetrain System (Chain & Gears)
  • Week 5: Spinning Circles - Bearing Systems
  • Week 6: Round & Round - Wheel Truing & "Leftovers"
Class fee for the Mountain Bike Edition is $200 for the series. Class size is small with only 5 students. Students will receive access to high quality bike-specific tools and one-on-one instruction from some of Portland's finest bike mechanic instructors!
Class runs of 6 weeks on Wednesday nights, 6:30 - 8:30 and begins June 13th. There will be no class on July 4th.
