Be Your Own Bike Mechanic: Summer Midweek Intensive August 8 and 9
Be Your Own Bike Mechanic is an introdutory class with a hands-on approach to learning bike repair. Taught by professional mechanic and educator, Shannon Belt from the Bicycle Coaltion of Maine, students will learn how to deconstruct their bike, identify mechanical problems, and put it all back together again.
The class runs for 2 longer sessions, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Portland Gear Hub Bike School. The Bike School is a dedicated program and class space with 5 benches, stands, and bike-specific tools. There will be a balance of class and bench time to work on your own bikes.
Topics include:
  • "Basic Balance" - Overview of Bikes & Flat Tire Practice
  • “Make It Stop!” - The Braking System
  • “Shifty Characters” - The Shifting System
  • “Make it Go” - The Drivetrain System (Chain & Gears)
  • "Spinning Circles" - Bearing Systems
  • "Round & Round" - Wheel Truing & "Leftovers"
Class fee is $180 for the series. Class size is small with only 5 students. Students will receive access to high quality bike-specific tools and one-on-one instruction from one of Portland's finest bike mechanic instructors!
